Slat & Shade

The best shade cloth for a patio

Shade cloth sold for vegetable beds is the wrong fabric over a seating area. Shading people needs roughly double the density that shading plants does, and only some manufacturers publish the figure.

The short answer

Coolaroo Sun Protection Fabric at 90% UV block. It is the densest fabric Coolaroo publishes, in a knitted tape and monofilament construction that still lets air through, and it carries a 15-year fabric warranty against UV cracking — the longest published term on any shade fabric we track.

The densest fabric Coolaroo publishes, and the only one in this list whose stated purpose is shading people rather than plants. Over a patio that distinction is the whole decision.

Up to 90% UV block, in a knitted tape and monofilament construction, with air flowing through the knit. The 90% is what makes a patio usable in the middle of the afternoon — at garden densities you still squint. The knit is what stops it becoming an oven: a breathable fabric lets hot air escape upward instead of trapping it against your head, which is the failure mode of every solid tarp strung over a seating area.

A 15-year fabric warranty against cracks, splits and tears due to UV degradation. That is the longest published term on any shade fabric on this site, by a wide margin, and it is specifically against the thing that actually kills shade cloth — ultraviolet attacking the polymer rather than mechanical wear.

Sold in 6 x 15 ft, 6 x 50 ft, 6 x 100 ft and 12 x 50 ft. The 12 ft width is the one to buy for a patio: a single piece across the span avoids a seam, and a seam in shade cloth is both the visual flaw and the place tension concentrates.

Skip it if: You are shading plants. 90% is too dense for most vegetables, which want light as well as protection — the 50% Garden Cover below is the correct density there.

The density to buy if 90% feels like too much roof, which it genuinely can on a north-facing patio or in a cooler climate.

Up to 70% UV block, breathable, in the same knitted HDPE family as the 90%. Seventy per cent is the figure that keeps a space bright while removing the glare and most of the heat load. Over a patio used mainly in the morning and evening it is often the better call than the densest option.

Sizes run 6 x 15 ft, 6 x 50 ft, 6 x 100 ft and 12 x 50 ft, the same spread as the 90% — so choosing density does not cost you choice of size, which is unusual in this category.

No warranty is published for this line, where the 90% and the 50% Garden Cover both carry 15 years. That gap is why it ranks second rather than first: on a site that judges products on what the manufacturer commits to in writing, a missing term counts against an otherwise identical fabric.

Skip it if: The patio faces the afternoon sun in a hot climate. At 70% you will still want to move your chair, which is the sign you should have bought 90%.

The only shade cloth here sold cut to your dimensions, and the only one publishing a GSM figure. Both matter if your patio is not a tidy rectangle.

180 GSM knitted polyethylene, 75% block rate, up to 95% UV stabilized, cut from 6–24 ft wide by 1–300 ft long. That width range is the feature: a 24 ft span in one piece is not available from anyone else here, and a single piece across an awkward opening beats two panels and a seam every time.

A GSM figure is rare on shade cloth and worth having, because it is the one number that lets you compare cloth weight against the shade sails on this site rather than guessing. GSM and shade percentage explained sets out how the two figures relate.

The trade is the edge, and it is a real one: a cut edge with no taping. Grommets, edge tape and fixings are all a separate purchase, and an untaped knitted edge will run if you tension it hard without reinforcing it first. Budget the hemming work as part of the job, not as an afterthought. Three-year limited warranty.

Skip it if: You want to hang it the day it arrives. This is fabric, not a finished panel — the edges and fixings are yours to add.

Included deliberately, because a lot of patios have a vegetable bed or a row of pots along one edge, and 90% over both is the wrong answer for the plants.

Up to 50% UV block, knitted mono/mono HDPE, breathable to air and water — and that water permeability is the point if anything is growing underneath. Rain gets through to the soil instead of being thrown off the edge of the fabric, which under a denser cloth creates a dry zone and a drip line.

The same 15-year fabric warranty against UV cracking as the 90% Sun Protection fabric. Coolaroo backs its lightest and densest fabrics equally, which is a credible signal about the polymer rather than about either density.

Sizes 6 x 15 ft, 6 x 100 ft and 12 x 50 ft. Fifty per cent is not enough shade over seating in a hot climate and we would not recommend it there — this is the pick for a growing area, or for a patio where the brief is taking the edge off rather than making shade.

Skip it if: You are shading a seating area in a hot climate. At 50% the patio will still be uncomfortable in the afternoon — that is what the 90% fabric is for.

Why garden density is wrong over a patio

Almost all the shade cloth sold in the US is sold to gardeners, and the density advice that comes with it is written for plants. Over a seating area that advice is actively wrong.

Plants need light as well as protection, which is why garden guidance lands between 30% and 50% for most vegetables — enough to stop scorch, not enough to stall growth. A tomato under 90% cloth is a disappointed tomato.

People need the opposite trade. Nothing is photosynthesising on your patio. The goal is removing glare and radiant heat, and the fabric that does that is the densest one you can tolerate visually — which is why the 90% fabric leads this page and the 50% is listed for a different job entirely.

The number to look for is UV block, not colour or thickness. Darker cloth looks like it blocks more and often does not; what matters is the published block percentage and whether the knit still lets air through. A dense fabric that does not breathe is a heat trap, which is why every pick here is knitted rather than coated.

What each fabric publishes

Density, construction, warranty and available sizes, exactly as the manufacturers print them.

Published specifications for the four shade fabrics, as checked on the manufacturers' own pages

Two of the four publish a 15-year term against UV degradation, which is the only failure mode that matters on a fabric left outdoors permanently. That is the reason this page ranks a Coolaroo first rather than the fabric with the published GSM: a measured weight tells you what the cloth is, and a warranty tells you how long the manufacturer expects it to stay that way.

Hanging it so it lasts

Shade cloth almost never fails in the middle of the panel. It fails at the edges and the fixings, and nearly all of that is decided during the hour you put it up.

  1. 01Tension it in two directions, not one. A cloth pulled tight along its length and loose across its width flaps, and flapping is mechanical fatigue. Cross-tension is what keeps a panel still.
  2. 02Give it a fall so water runs off. Even breathable cloth holds some water in heavy rain, and a dead-flat panel ponds. A few inches of drop across the span is enough.
  3. 03Spread the load at every fixing point. A cable tie through a single knit loop is a tear waiting to happen. Use a reinforced eyelet, a batten, or edge tape through which the load is shared across several inches of fabric.
  4. 04Reinforce a cut edge before you tension it. This is the step the custom-cut fabric needs and the finished Coolaroo panels do not. Tape or hem it, then fix through the reinforcement.
  5. 05Take it down before winter if snow is likely. Shade cloth is a summer component; a wet snow load on a tensioned panel pulls fixings out of masonry. Shade sail sizing and tension covers the tensioning method in detail.

What we would actually do

The 90% Coolaroo in the 12 ft width, in one piece, with a fall across the span. It is the densest fabric published here, it breathes, and the 15-year UV warranty is the longest commitment anyone in this category makes to the thing that actually destroys shade cloth.

The 70% if the patio is north-facing or the climate is mild, where the densest option can make a space feel closed in rather than comfortable.

The Windscreen4less cut fabric if the span is awkward or wider than 12 ft — and budget the time and the tape to finish the edges, because that is not optional on an untaped cut.

And if plants share the space, run the 50% over them and the 90% over the seating. Two fabrics on one structure is not a compromise; it is the correct answer to two different problems.

What we cut, and why

Every model below was a genuine candidate and did not make the list. The reason is stated in each case, because a shortlist with no visible rejections is not evidence of a selection process.

Waterproof polyester shade fabric
A solid waterproof sheet over a patio keeps rain off and traps every bit of heat that comes through it, because there is nowhere for hot air to go. It has a real use — rain cover — but it is not shade cloth, and over seating it reliably makes the space hotter. [HDPE vs waterproof shade fabric](/shade-sails/hdpe-vs-waterproof-shade-fabric) covers the trade in full.
Finished shade sails
A hemmed, cabled sail with corner rings is a different product: more expensive per square foot, far easier to tension, and designed to be a feature rather than a cover. If you want one panel you can hang and forget, buy a sail — [best shade sails for patio](/shade-sails/best-shade-sails-for-patio) ranks them.
Coolaroo 30% Garden Cover
The lightest density in the range, intended for scorch protection on a few hot afternoons rather than for standing shade. Over a patio it is close to no shade at all. It earns its place on [best shade cloth for garden](/shade-sails/best-shade-cloth-for-garden) where that is exactly what is wanted.

Questions people ask

What is the best shade cloth for a patio?
Coolaroo Sun Protection Fabric at 90% UV block. It is the densest fabric Coolaroo publishes, its knitted tape and monofilament construction still lets hot air escape upward, and it carries a 15-year fabric warranty against UV cracking — the longest term on any shade fabric we track.
What percentage shade cloth is best for a patio?
Around 90% if the patio takes afternoon sun in a hot climate, and 70% if it is north-facing, used mainly in the morning, or in a cooler region. The 30–50% densities sold for vegetable beds are too light to make a seating area comfortable.
Is shade cloth or a shade sail better for a patio?
A sail if you want one hemmed, cabled panel you can tension and forget; cloth if you want to cover an awkward span cheaply or need a width no sail offers. Cloth is the lower price per square foot and the greater amount of work — see best shade sails for patio.
Does shade cloth make a patio cooler?
A breathable knitted cloth does, because it blocks radiant heat while letting warm air rise through it. A solid waterproof sheet usually does not — it stops the sun and traps the heat underneath, which is why every pick on this page is knitted rather than coated.
How long does patio shade cloth last?
UV degradation is what kills it, and the published warranties are the best available guide: 15 years against UV cracking on the Coolaroo Sun Protection and Garden Cover fabrics, three years on the Windscreen4less cut cloth. Tensioning and edge detailing decide whether it reaches that.
Can you leave shade cloth up all year?
In a mild climate, yes. Where snow is likely, take it down — a tensioned panel holding wet snow pulls fixings out of masonry, and the cloth itself was never rated for that load. It is a summer component in a cold region.
Is darker shade cloth better?
Not reliably. Colour affects how the fabric looks and how much heat it absorbs, but the figure that tells you how much sun it stops is the published UV block percentage. Buy on the number, not the shade of the sample.
Does shade cloth let rain through?
Knitted shade cloth is breathable and passes most rain, which is a feature over planting and a limitation over a dining table. If keeping rain off is the brief, you want a waterproof sail or a solid roof rather than cloth — HDPE vs waterproof shade fabric covers the choice.
