About Slat & Shade

Ryder M. is the hands-on owner behind Magoo Media Group, the publisher of Slat & Shade. He built this site after getting tired of backyard shade structures that don't survive their second winter.

That is the whole biography, and it is deliberately short. Ryder is not a structural engineer, a licensed contractor or a certified installer, and this site will never claim otherwise — no credentials, no years-in-business count, no number of structures installed, no "as featured in". Every one of those would be easy to write and impossible to evidence, and a site whose entire proposition is trustworthiness cannot afford a single invented line.

Backyard shade is a category where the thing you want to know is almost never on the page. You want to know whether the pergola will still be standing in ten years. What you get is a color swatch, a footprint in feet and the phrase "heavy duty aluminum".

So this site does one thing: it judges pergolas, hardtop gazebos, shade sails and canopies on the numbers that actually decide whether they last — wind rating, snow load, anchoring requirement and materials — and it cites where every figure came from.

The reader we are writing for has bought the cheap one already. They are not looking for the best deal; they are looking for the last one they have to buy. That means we will sometimes tell you to spend more, sometimes tell you the budget option is genuinely fine, and often tell you that the manufacturer has not published the number you need — which is the honest answer far more often than this niche admits.

Slat & Shade earns a commission when a reader buys through one of our Amazon links. It costs you nothing extra and it never changes what we recommend — we earn the same rate whichever product we pick, so there is no version of this where recommending the wrong thing pays better.
