The best pergolas for small patios

On a small patio the number that decides whether a pergola fits is not the size on the box. It is the distance between the posts, and the manufacturers that publish it are the ones worth shopping.

The short answer

The Outsunny 10 x 10 retractable aluminum pergola. At 118 x 118 in. overall with 101.25 x 98.5 in. between the columns and 87.75 in. of height, it is the only small pergola here publishing both its footprint and its post spacing — the two numbers a tight patio actually needs.

Sizes
10 x 10 ft, 87.75 in. high

The only pergola in this size class that publishes its overall footprint, its column spacing and its height — which on a small patio are the only three numbers that decide anything.

118 x 118 in. overall, 101.25 x 98.5 in. between the columns, 87.75 in. high. Work in inches here because feet round away the detail that matters: you lose about a foot and a half of width to the posts, and the headroom is seven and a quarter feet rather than the eight-plus a bigger pergola gives you.

A retractable polyester canopy on five sliding rails, with a 96 x 99.25 in. top cloth. On a small patio a retractable roof earns its place more than anywhere else: a courtyard that is shaded all day is a cold courtyard, and being able to pull the cloth back recovers the sun you bought the patio for.

Eight support stakes supplied, and Outsunny states outright that it is not recommended for storms or heavy wind and rain. That is unusually honest and it is useful information rather than a defect — retract the canopy and the structure stops being a sail. We would rate the published candour above a silent listing.

Skip it if: You want a permanent weatherproof roof. This is a shade structure with a seasonal cloth, and the manufacturer says so.

Sizes
10 x 13 ft

The cheapest route to an adjustable roof, at a footprint that still fits a modest patio — and the pick if you want rain cover rather than shade.

10 x 13 ft with adjustable aluminum louvers and integrated drainage. The 13 ft dimension is the one to check against your space: this is a deeper structure than the 10 x 10, and on a small patio depth is usually what runs out first. Where it fits, the louvered roof does something no canopy does — closes for rain and stays closed.

The louvers also solve the small-patio heat problem. A compact space under a closed roof gets stuffy fast because there is no volume for warm air to rise into. Opening the louvers vents it without taking any roof off.

No wind rating and no snow figure are published, and on a small enclosed courtyard that matters less than it would in the open — a sheltered site is genuinely a sheltered site. One year of warranty, which is the category norm at this price.

Skip it if: Your patio is tight in both directions. At 13 ft deep this is a bigger footprint than the headline 10 ft suggests.

12 x 10 ft, 8.1 ft high; 9.4 x 8.1 ft interior with a 7.7 ft entry height

The most substantial frame available at a small footprint, and the pick if the pergola has to look permanent rather than temporary.

10 x 12 ft on 4.7 in. x 4.7 in. posts, 242.51 lb assembled. Those are the thickest posts and the heaviest frame of any retractable pergola we track. On a small patio, heavy posts are a visual trade: they read as architecture rather than garden furniture, and they take more floor than a slim extrusion.

A 500 g/m² CPAI-84 certified sling canopy on a manual pull-through rod, with anchor plates and ground stakes included. A published fabric weight and a fire certification on a retractable is unusual — most of the class publishes neither — and the included anchor plates mean the fixings are not a separate shopping trip.

No wind or snow figure is published. Treat the fabric as the seasonal part and the frame as the permanent part: roll it away before a storm and take it off before winter, and the steel underneath will outlast every retractable left out all year.

Skip it if: Floor space is the binding constraint. 4.7 in. posts on a small patio take noticeably more room than the slim-column alternatives.

Sizes
12 x 10 ft, 14.5 x 10 ft, 16.5 x 10 ft

The smallest genuinely fixed roof here, and the one that keeps a small space usable in rain without anything to operate.

12 x 10 ft is the smallest published size, under solid polycarbonate with drainage holes on an aluminum frame. On a compact patio the translucent panel matters more than it does on a large one: a small courtyard under an opaque roof is a dark room, and polycarbonate keeps the light.

A published roof weight capacity of 10 lb/ft² (50 kg/m²), which is a roof capacity rather than a certified snow rating — but it is a published number, and on a structure you cannot retract it is the figure to check against your local snow load before buying.

No wind figure is published, and a solid panel is the biggest pressure surface in this list. That is a smaller concern in an enclosed courtyard than in an open yard, which is exactly the site this page is about — but anchor it properly regardless. How to anchor a pergola covers pavers and small slabs, which is what most small patios are.

Skip it if: Your patio is under about 10 ft in its shorter dimension. 12 x 10 ft is the floor of this range and it does not go smaller.

Why post spacing is the number that matters

Every listing in this category leads with an overall size, and on a small patio that figure tells you about the roof rather than about the space you get to use.

The posts are inboard of the roof edge, and they are what you lose. The Outsunny 10 x 10 is 118 x 118 in. overall with 101.25 x 98.5 in. between the columns — about 17 inches of width gone to the structure. On a patio that is 11 ft wide, that difference decides whether a table fits between the posts or jams against one.

Headroom is the second number, and it is lower than you expect at this size. The 10 x 10 publishes 87.75 in. — seven feet three. That is fine to sit under and tight to stand under if you are tall, and it is a figure almost nobody checks before ordering.

So shop the inch dimensions, not the rounded feet. The manufacturers that publish column spacing to the quarter-inch are telling you they expect you to measure. On a small patio, that is the single most useful signal on a listing.

Published dimensions and roof type for the four small-patio picks

One row publishes a post spacing and a height. On a large lawn that would be a footnote; on a small patio it is the difference between measuring and guessing, and it is why the 10 x 10 leads this page despite a canopy its own manufacturer tells you to retract in bad weather.

Fitting a pergola to a tight space

Small-patio mistakes are predictable, and all of them are cheaper to avoid than to fix once the posts are bolted down.

  1. 01Mark the post positions on the ground first, not the roof outline. Chalk four squares where the columns land and live with them for a day. This catches the post that sits exactly where you walk through the back door.
  2. 02Measure your table with the chairs pulled out. A dining set needs roughly 3 ft of clearance behind each seat to stand up and leave. That is the dimension that has to fit between the posts, not the table top.
  3. 03Check the overhang against the boundary. A roof that overhangs a fence throws rain into next door's bed and cannot be maintained from your side. On a small patio the overhang is often a larger proportion of the structure.
  4. 04Check the height against the door swing and any window above. At 87 in. a pergola beam can cross a ground-floor window head, and once it is anchored that is permanent.
  5. 05Then check the surface you are anchoring into. Small patios are usually pavers or a thin slab rather than a deep pour, which changes the fixing entirely — how to anchor a pergola covers both, including what the no-drill options genuinely hold.

What we would actually do

The Outsunny 10 x 10, because it publishes the two numbers a small patio turns on — 101.25 x 98.5 in. between the columns and 87.75 in. of height — and because a retractable roof on a compact space gives back the sun that a fixed roof takes permanently.

The Outsunny 10 x 13 louvered if rain cover is the point and the depth fits. An adjustable roof in a small space is worth more than in a large one, because a courtyard under a closed roof has nowhere for warm air to go.

The Sunjoy 10 x 12 if you want it to look built. 4.7 in. posts and 242 lb of frame read as architecture; just accept that they cost you floor area you may not have.

And if the patio is genuinely tiny, price a wall-mounted awning first. No posts is the only way to lose no floor, and nothing on this page beats that on a space where every square foot is already committed.

What we cut, and why

Every model below was a genuine candidate and did not make the list. The reason is stated in each case, because a shortlist with no visible rejections is not evidence of a selection process.

Large louvered pergolas (12 x 16 ft and up)
The 12 x 16 and 12 x 20 options in the Domi and PURPLE LEAF ranges are better structures with better published figures — and they are the wrong product for a small patio, where an oversized roof shades the whole space and the posts land in the walkway. They lead [best louvered pergolas](/pergolas/best-louvered-pergolas) instead.
Cedar pergola kits on 6 x 6 posts
Heavy timber posts are excellent structure and the most expensive thing you can do to a small floor area — 6 in. x 6 in. posts plus plinths eat a corner each. They belong on [best cedar and wood pergola kits](/pergolas/best-cedar-and-wood-pergola-kits), where the footprint is not the constraint.
Wall-mounted awnings
For a genuinely tiny patio an awning off the house wall is often the better answer, because it has no posts at all. That is a real recommendation rather than a dismissal — it is just a different product, covered on [best retractable awnings](/canopies/best-retractable-awnings) and [pergola vs awning](/pergolas/pergola-vs-awning).

Questions people ask

What is the best pergola for a small patio?
The Outsunny 10 x 10 retractable aluminum pergola. It is the only one at this size publishing its overall footprint (118 x 118 in.), its column spacing (101.25 x 98.5 in.) and its height (87.75 in.) — the three numbers that decide whether a pergola fits a tight space.
What size pergola fits a small patio?
Work from post spacing rather than overall size. A 10 x 10 pergola typically gives about 8 ft 5 in. between the columns, which takes a four-seat table with chairs pulled out and little else. Measure your furniture with the chairs out before choosing a size.
How much space do you lose to pergola posts?
More than people expect — the Outsunny 10 x 10 loses about 17 inches of width to its columns, and a cedar kit on 6 in. x 6 in. posts loses considerably more. On a small patio that is the difference between a table fitting between the posts and jamming against one.
How tall is a small pergola?
Lower than a full-size one. The Outsunny 10 x 10 publishes 87.75 in. — about seven feet three — which is comfortable to sit under and tight to stand under. Check it against your door swing and any window head above the patio before anchoring anything.
Can you put a pergola on a paver patio?
Yes, and most small patios are exactly that. Pavers are a different fixing problem from a poured slab because the paver itself is not structural — the anchor has to reach what is underneath. How to anchor a pergola covers the method, and gazebo foundation options covers building a base where there is not one.
Is a pergola or an awning better for a small patio?
An awning if floor space is the binding constraint, because it has no posts at all. A pergola if you want a freestanding structure that does not depend on the house wall. Pergola vs awning sets out the full comparison.
Do small pergolas still need anchoring?
Yes. A smaller roof is a smaller sail but it also has less weight holding it down, and small patios are often paver or thin-slab surfaces where a careless fixing holds nothing. Anchor it, and check what is under the surface before you drill.
Does a small pergola make a patio feel smaller?
A fixed opaque roof can, which is why both of our top two picks have roofs that open. A retractable canopy or adjustable louvers let you have shade when you want it and the sky when you do not, and on a compact space that flexibility is worth more than it is on a large one.
