The best pergolas with a retractable canopy

On a retractable pergola the fabric is the product. The frame will still be standing in fifteen years; the canopy is what you replace, and how often you replace it is decided by what the fabric is. Sunjoy is the only manufacturer here that tells you.

500 g/m² CPAI-84 certified sling fabric. Two separate pieces of information, both unusual in this category. 500 g/m² is a heavy outdoor fabric — for comparison, the shade sails we cover run 180 to 260 GSM — and CPAI-84 is the flame-resistance standard that campgrounds and some jurisdictions require, which is a certification a manufacturer pays to hold rather than a word it can type.

The frame is the heaviest here too: powder-coated heat-transfer woodgrain steel with 4.7 in. x 4.7 in. posts, 242.51 lb assembled. Almost an inch and a half more post section than the Outsunny alternatives, and steel rather than aluminum. On a slab that is the right trade; on a deck it is a load to check.

Anchor plates and ground stakes are included, which given that nothing else in this category supplies a plate at all is worth noting.

Dimensions: 12 x 10 ft at 8.1 ft high, with a 9.4 x 8.1 ft interior and a 7.7 ft entry height. The canopy retracts manually on a pull-through rod. No wind rating, no snow figure and no warranty term are published, which is the real gap on an otherwise unusually well-specified product.

The only retractable-canopy pergola we could find that publishes a wind figure at all — and the way it publishes it is worth a paragraph, because at first glance it looks like nonsense.

Windproof Level 5-6 with support stakes, 6-7 with anchor bolts. Those are Beaufort scale numbers, not mph. Beaufort 5-6 is roughly 19 to 31 mph; Beaufort 6-7 is roughly 25 to 38. So the honest translation is: staked into soft ground, this is a fresh-breeze structure, and bolted down it handles a strong breeze.

That is a low number, and publishing it is still the most useful thing on the listing. It tells you the difference bolting makes — a whole Beaufort level — and it tells you not to leave the canopy out in anything approaching a gale. Compare that to the pergolas here publishing nothing.

The frame: wood-grain finish aluminum with 3.25 in. x 3.25 in. columns, 117 x 156.25 in. overall at 88.25 in. high. The canopy is polyester with a PA coating, with a magnetic locking side panel.

Anchoring is the best supplied on this page: eight stakes for soft ground and eight expansion screws for hard surfaces, both in the box. A manufacturer that supplies both substrates' fixings is a manufacturer expecting the product to actually be anchored. One year against material and manufacturing defects.

The compact option at 10 x 10 ft, 87.75 in. high, on 101.25 x 98.5 in. column spacing — which is the figure to check against your patio or deck before anything else, because it is where the posts actually land.

The mechanism is the reason this one rather than a generic alternative: five sliding rails carrying a 96 x 99.25 in. polyester top cloth. More rails means the canopy gathers more evenly and pulls with less effort, which sounds like a detail until you have operated a two-rail canopy in a breeze.

Eight support stakes are supplied, which again says "lawn" — on a patio or deck you are buying fixings.

Outsunny states in its own words that it is not recommended for use in extreme weather conditions such as storms or heavy winds or rain. That sentence is the specification. No wind rating and no snow figure are published, and given the sibling product publishes a Beaufort figure, the absence here is informative.

One year against material and manufacturing defects.

Included deliberately, because for a lot of people searching for a retractable canopy the better purchase is a louvered roof, and nobody selling fabric will tell you that.

A louvered pergola does the same job — shade when you want it, sky when you do not — with adjustable aluminum louvers instead of fabric. The louvers close against rain with integrated drainage in the beams, open for airflow, and never need replacing.

The published figures are in a different class: 72 mph, fully secured with expansion screws on a hardened floor, on powder-coated aluminum at 1.5 mm wall thickness with 4.33 in. x 4.33 in. crossbeams. Against Beaufort 6-7 — roughly 25 to 38 mph — that is not a close comparison.

Sizes 10 x 12 through 14 x 24 ft. One year of warranty, and no snow figure published, which is the Athena's own gap.

The honest case against it is cost and reversibility. A louvered roof is a larger outlay and a more permanent installation, and a fabric canopy that fully retracts leaves you with genuinely open sky in a way that closed-but-openable louvers do not quite.
