The short answer

The Domi Outdoor Living louvered pergola. It is the only roofed pergola here publishing a wind rating (72 mph), a per-square-foot snow load (15 lb/ft²) and an anchoring method covering a wooden deck as well as concrete — and its louvers close to a waterproof roof and open for airflow.

The only pergola on this site that publishes a wind figure, a per-square-foot snow figure and an anchoring specification covering both a deck and a slab. For a structure whose whole job is being a roof, that is the complete answer.

72 mph wind and 15 lb/ft² of snow, with the louvers closed. The snow figure is the rare one: it is the only per-square-foot number any louvered pergola here prints, which means it is the only one you can hold against your local ground snow load without doing arithmetic on a whole-roof total.

Adjustable aluminum louvers, so the roof has two states. Closed, it sheds rain and carries the published snow load. Open, it vents heat instead of trapping it under a solid panel. That is the functional advantage over every fixed roof in this list, and it costs nothing in rain protection.

M6 expansion bolts into a wooden deck or a concrete floor, immediately after assembly — and five years on the hardtop roof and frame against the category standard of one. Sizes run 10 x 10 ft up to 12 x 20 ft. How to anchor a pergola covers what each surface actually needs.

Skip it if: You want daylight through the roof. Closed louvers are opaque — the Outsunny polycarbonate below is the one that lets light in.

The same roof idea on the heaviest published frame in the class, with the highest wind figure here — and a qualifier attached to it that decides whether the number applies to you.

72 mph fully secured with expansion screws on a hardened floor. That condition is the whole sentence. A hardened floor means concrete or equivalent; PURPLE LEAF does not extend the rating to a timber deck, and neither will we. If your pergola is going on a deck, the Domi is the pick that names one.

Powder-coated aluminum with a 1.5 mm wall and 4.33 in. x 4.33 in. crossbeams — the thickest published section of any louvered pergola we track. On a roofed structure the crossbeam is the member carrying the closed-louver load across the span, so section matters more here than on an open trellis.

Adjustable louvers with integrated drainage, which is the detail that separates a louvered roof that works from one that drips. Water runs inside the louver and out through the beam rather than finding the joint. One year of warranty, which is a straight loss against the Domi's five.

Skip it if: The pergola is going on a wooden deck. The published figure names a hardened floor, and a rating measured on concrete is not a rating for joists.

Aluminum pergola with a translucent polycarbonate roof panel over a wooden deck

Best solid roof

Outsunny Hardtop Polycarbonate Pergola

A solid-roof aluminum pergola that publishes a roof load figure instead of a wind rating — useful for rain, unproven for wind.

Solid polycarbonate with drainage holes

Sizes
12 x 10 ft, 14.5 x 10 ft, 16.5 x 10 ft

The only genuinely fixed, solid roof here — and the only one that lets light through. If what you want is a permanent hardtop you never have to operate, this is the category.

Solid polycarbonate with drainage holes on an aluminum frame, with a published roof weight capacity of 10 lb/ft² (50 kg/m²). A roof capacity is not a certified snow rating and we will not read it as one, but it is a published number in a class where most listings have none — and it is the figure to check against your local ground snow load before committing.

Sizes 12 x 10 ft, 14.5 x 10 ft and 16.5 x 10 ft, which is generous depth for a dining set plus circulation. Light comes through, so the space underneath does not go cave-dark the way it does under steel or closed louvers.

No wind figure is published, and that is the gap. A solid panel is the largest uninterrupted pressure surface of any roof in this list, which makes the absence of a wind number more significant here than on a louvered roof that can be opened to let a gust through. Anchor it properly and treat an exposed site as a reason to choose differently.

Skip it if: The site is exposed. A fixed solid roof with no published wind rating is the riskiest combination on this page.

10 x 13 ft

The least expensive route to an adjustable roof, and the pergola here with the least published about how it behaves in weather. Both of those facts are the pick.

Adjustable aluminum louvers with integrated drainage, on an aluminum frame, at 10 x 13 ft. Functionally it is the same roof concept as the two above: close it for rain, open it for air. The drainage provision is there, which is the part a cheap louvered roof most often omits.

No wind rating and no snow figure are published at all. On a roofed pergola those are the two numbers that matter most, so this ranks fourth on a site that judges structures on what the manufacturer will commit to in writing.

One year of warranty, and a 10 x 13 ft footprint that is usefully deep for the money. We would buy this for a sheltered courtyard and not for an exposed garden — and we would open the louvers before a storm rather than leaving a closed panel to take the pressure.

Skip it if: You get real snow or real wind. With no published figure for either, the honest answer is that nobody can tell you what this roof carries.

Three things are sold as a pergola roof

Search for a pergola with a roof and you will be shown three unrelated products. Telling them apart is most of the decision, so here they are in the order they stop being a roof.

  • Adjustable louvers. Aluminum slats that rotate closed into a waterproof surface and open for airflow. The only roof here that is a roof and a non-roof on demand, and the only type in this list with a published per-square-foot snow figure behind it.
  • A solid hardtop. Fixed polycarbonate or metal, permanently closed. Simplest, nothing to operate, nothing to fail — and the largest continuous surface for wind to push on.
  • A retractable fabric canopy. Cloth on sliding rails. Genuinely useful shade, and not weather protection: the manufacturers themselves tell you to retract it in wind, and one of them states outright that it is not recommended for storms.
  • An open trellis. Not a roof at all, despite being what the word pergola originally meant. Rain falls through it. If a listing shows crossing rafters with gaps, that is what you are buying.
  • The test that cuts through all four: ask what happens to the roof in February. A louvered roof closes. A hardtop stays put. A canopy comes off. A trellis was never doing anything.

Every published figure, side by side

What separates these four is what their manufacturers will print, so here it is rather than in prose.

One row has a figure in every column. That is the entire case for the Domi, and it is why a five-year warranty on the roof and frame reads as a company that expects the structure to still be there — materials and warranties sets out why we treat a warranty term as the manufacturer's own estimate of service life.

What a roof adds to the load path

Putting a roof on a pergola does not just add shade. It changes the structure from something wind passes through into something wind pushes against, and every published figure in the table above is a consequence of that.

A closed roof generates uplift, not just drag. Air moving over a flat or slightly pitched surface lifts it. That is why the anchoring specification matters more on a roofed pergola than on an open trellis, and why a manufacturer that publishes a wind rating without naming an anchoring condition has not told you much.

Snow is the load an open pergola never sees. A trellis sheds it between the rafters. A closed louvered roof or a solid hardtop holds all of it, which is why 15 lb/ft² and 10 lb/ft² are the two most important figures on this page for anyone north of a snow line. Compare them to your local ground snow load, not to each other.

Drainage decides whether the roof is a roof or a tray. Both louvered picks publish integrated drainage; the polycarbonate publishes drainage holes. A roof with nowhere for water to go ponds, and ponded water on a light aluminum frame is a load nobody rated it for.

What we would actually do

The Domi, bolted down the day it is assembled, louvers closed in rain and open in heat. It is the only roofed pergola here that publishes wind, snow and a deck anchoring method, and the only one whose roof has two useful states instead of one.

The PURPLE LEAF Athena if it is going on concrete and you want the heaviest section. A 1.5 mm wall and 4.33 in. crossbeams under drained louvers, with a 72 mph figure measured in exactly the condition you would be installing it in. Accept the one-year term for what it is.

The Outsunny polycarbonate if you want light and nothing to operate — on a sheltered site, anchored properly, with the 10 lb/ft² roof capacity checked against your snow load first.

And if what you actually want is sky on demand, buy a retractable and treat the fabric as seasonal rather than structural. That is a different page, and it is the honest answer for a lot of people who search for a roof.

What we cut, and why

Every model below was a genuine candidate and did not make the list. The reason is stated in each case, because a shortlist with no visible rejections is not evidence of a selection process.

Retractable canopy pergolas
A fabric canopy on sliding rails is a shade system, not a roof — the correct storm procedure is to retract it, and the correct winter procedure is to take it off. That is a genuinely good product with a different job, ranked on [best pergolas with a retractable canopy](/pergolas/best-pergolas-with-retractable-canopy).
Open-trellis cedar pergola kits
A multi-level cedar trellis is the original pergola and it has no roof at all: rain goes straight through, shade is dappled, snow falls between the rafters. Excellent structures, wrong page — see [best cedar and wood pergola kits](/pergolas/best-cedar-and-wood-pergola-kits) and [do pergolas provide shade](/pergolas/do-pergolas-provide-shade).
Hardtop gazebos
If you want a solid roof, four posts and enclosure, a gazebo does it with a published snow figure far above anything in this class. Not a mistake, a different structure — [pergola vs gazebo](/pergolas/pergola-vs-gazebo) sets the two against each other properly.

Questions people ask

What is the best pergola with a roof?
The Domi Outdoor Living louvered pergola. It publishes 72 mph of wind, 15 lb/ft² of snow with the louvers closed, and an anchoring method covering a wooden deck as well as concrete — the only roofed pergola we track that prints all three — with five years on the roof and frame.
Do pergolas with roofs keep rain out?
Louvered and solid hardtop roofs do, provided drainage is designed in. A retractable fabric canopy sheds light rain and is not weather protection, and an open trellis roof does nothing at all. Ask what the roof does in February and the categories separate themselves.
Is a louvered or a solid pergola roof better?
Louvered, for most people. It closes to shed rain and carry a snow load, and opens to vent heat instead of trapping it — and the louvered picks here publish better figures than the solid one. A solid hardtop wins only on simplicity and on letting daylight through.
How much snow can a roofed pergola hold?
The only per-square-foot figures published across these four are the Domi's 15 lb/ft² snow load and the Outsunny polycarbonate's 10 lb/ft² roof weight capacity. Both need checking against your local ground snow load — snow load explained covers how to do that comparison.
Can you put a roof on an existing pergola?
Retrofitting a solid or louvered roof onto a frame not designed for one adds uplift and snow load the structure was never rated for, so we would not. Adding shade fabric is a different matter and is genuinely worth doing — see how to add shade to a pergola.
Do roofed pergolas need planning permission?
More often than open ones. A solid roof can change how a structure is classified, how it is assessed for drainage and whether it counts toward lot coverage. Ask your building department before ordering — pergola permits and HOA rules lists the questions.
Is a roofed pergola the same as a pavilion?
No. A pavilion is a permanent pitched-roof structure, usually built rather than assembled from a kit, and it carries more. A roofed pergola is a kit structure with a flat or slightly pitched roof system — pergola vs pavilion sets out the differences that matter.
Are louvered pergolas waterproof when closed?
The ones here are designed to be, with drainage integrated into the louvers and the beams so water runs out rather than through the joints. What varies is how well that drainage is detailed — both louvered picks on this page publish it, which is why they are the picks.
