The best pergolas for decks

This is the only pergola we track whose manufacturer writes the word "deck" into its anchoring instruction: M6 expansion bolts into a wooden deck or concrete floor, immediately after assembly. Everything else in the category assumes concrete and leaves the deck case to you.

That instruction is worth reading closely, because it is doing more work than it looks like. It names the fastener size, it names both substrates, and it says immediately — which is a manufacturer telling you that an unbolted louvered pergola standing overnight is a structure with no rating at all.

The figures behind it are the best in the category: 72 mph wind and 15 lb/ft² snow. That snow number is the only per-square-foot figure any louvered pergola brand publishes, and on a deck it is the one you actually need, because deck framing has a live load capacity and snow on the pergola roof passes straight into it.

The warranty is five years on the hardtop roof and frame, with one year on curtains and netting — five times the category norm, and split by component in a way that tells you Domi knows which parts are consumables.

Sizes 10 x 10 through 12 x 20 ft, which covers most deck footprints. The one thing to plan around is that M6 expansion bolts into deck boards are not what the instruction means — they have to reach framing, which is the whole job on a deck and is covered below.

The pergola here that publishes the most about the thing carrying the load: powder-coated aluminum at 1.5 mm wall thickness with 4.33 in. x 4.33 in. crossbeams. On a deck, frame section matters in a way it does not on a slab, because a stiffer frame distributes load between posts instead of concentrating it at whichever one is over the weakest joist.

The wind figure is 72 mph, fully secured with expansion screws on a hardened floor. "Hardened floor" is concrete, not decking, and it is worth being honest that the figure describes a condition a deck does not provide. Fixed into joists or blocking a deck can get close; fixed into boards it is nowhere near.

Sizes 10 x 12 through 14 x 24 ft, the widest range in the category, and the Caesar line adds wall-mounted variants — which on a deck is the configuration worth looking at hardest, because attaching one side to the house halves the point loads your framing carries.

No snow figure is published, which on a deck is a real gap. Snow on the roof is load into your framing, and without a per-square-foot number you cannot check it against what the deck was built for.

One year of warranty.

A fabric roof on an aluminum frame puts a fraction of the dead load into deck framing that a louvered aluminum roof does, and a small fraction of what a cedar pergola does. On a deck whose capacity you do not know, that is the argument.

Published: aluminum frame, 118 x 118 in. overall with 101.25 x 98.5 in. column spacing, a polyester canopy on five sliding rails with a 96 x 99.25 in. top cloth, 87.75 in. high. Eight support stakes are supplied — which tells you Outsunny is thinking about lawns, so deck fixings are your purchase.

The retractable canopy is a genuine advantage on a deck specifically. Retracted, there is almost nothing up there to catch wind or hold snow, which means the structure's worst-case load on your framing is a choice you make rather than a condition you wait out.

Outsunny states in its own material that it is not recommended for storms or heavy wind and rain. We would rather quote that than soften it. No wind rating and no snow figure are published.

One year against material and manufacturing defects.

Included because a lot of decks are timber and a lot of people want the pergola to match, and because Yardistry publishes one thing nobody else does: its base dimensions as well as its roof.

Roof 12 x 12 ft, 8 ft 6 in. high; base 10 x 10 ft outside-to-outside of posts. On a deck that second figure is the one that matters, because it tells you exactly where the four point loads land — and therefore whether they land on joists or between them. Every other manufacturer here sells you a roof size and leaves you to measure the posts on delivery.

The structure is 6 in. x 6 in. posts with classic plinths under a multilevel open trellis roof. Those posts are the reason this is a serious deck consideration and also the reason to be careful: 6x6 timber is a lot of dead weight landing on four plates.

The warranty splits usefully: 5 years limited on the lumber against rot and decay, 1 year on materials and workmanship. A timber pergola on a deck sits in the damp that decks generate, so rot coverage is the right thing to have covered.

No wind rating and no anchoring provision are published, and the timber species is not stated on the product page either. On a deck that combination means the fixing design is entirely yours.

At 10 x 13 ft this is the compact louvered option, and on a narrow deck — which most decks are — footprint frequently decides the purchase before anything else does.

What is published: aluminum frame, adjustable aluminum louvers with integrated drainage, one year of warranty. The integrated drainage is the part worth having on a deck: a louvered roof that channels water into the beams and out at a corner keeps it off the boards directly under the pergola, which is where decking rots first.

What is not published: no wind rating, no snow figure, no anchoring provision. Three empty cells. On a raised deck, which catches wind that ground level does not, that is a meaningful absence rather than a technicality.

It is fair to note that Outsunny publishes a 10 lb/ft² roof capacity for its polycarbonate pergola, so the brand prints figures where it has them. For this product it does not, and we will not estimate one.

Read it as a good fit for a sheltered, low deck and a poor one for anything elevated or exposed.
