The best pergolas for hot tubs

A hot tub puts a warm, chemically loaded cloud of vapor against the underside of whatever you build over it, every night, for years. That is the condition this page ranks on.

The short answer

The Domi Outdoor Living louvered pergola. It is the only pergola here publishing a wind rating, a per-square-foot snow figure and an anchoring method that covers a wooden deck as well as concrete, and its louvers open to vent steam and close to keep rain off the lid. Buy adjustable, not solid, over a hot tub.

Sizes
10 x 10 ft, 10 x 12 ft, 10 x 13 ft, 12 x 16 ft, 12 x 20 ft

The only pergola on this site whose published figures cover all three of the questions a hot tub asks: how much wind it takes, how much snow the closed roof carries, and whether the manufacturer will let you bolt it to a deck.

72 mph wind, 15 lb/ft² of snow, and M6 expansion bolts into a wooden deck or a concrete floor, immediately after assembly. That snow number is the only per-square-foot figure any louvered pergola here prints, and the deck provision matters more than it looks: most hot tubs sit on a deck or a reinforced pad, and most published wind ratings in this class quietly assume a concrete slab.

The louvers are the feature, not the finish. A hot tub throws off a continuous plume of warm vapor carrying whatever you dose the water with. Under a solid roof that plume has nowhere to go; it condenses on the underside, runs back down the beams and sits in every joint. Louvers you can open after a soak let it clear, then close before the next rain so the lid and the cabinet stay dry.

Five years on the hardtop roof and frame, one year on curtains and netting. Read the split as a disclosure: Domi expects the aluminum to outlast the soft goods several times over, which is exactly the right expectation to set in a warm, wet microclimate.

Skip it if: You want the roof to disappear entirely on a clear night. Louvers rotate, they do not retract — the Sunjoy below is the one that opens to sky.

Aluminum louvered pergola with adjustable roof slats over a paved patio, louvers part open

Sizes
10 x 12 ft to 14 x 24 ft

The highest wind rating in the louvered class, and the only one that tells you the exact condition it was measured under — which is why it ranks second here rather than first.

72 mph fully secured with expansion screws on a hardened floor. Read that qualifier carefully if your hot tub is on timber. A hardened floor means concrete or a comparable slab; PURPLE LEAF does not extend the figure to a deck, and we are not going to extend it for them.

The structure behind the number is the heaviest published in the class: powder-coated aluminum with a 1.5 mm wall and 4.33 in. x 4.33 in. crossbeams, under adjustable louvers with integrated drainage. That drainage detail is worth more over a hot tub than anywhere else on the site — it is the difference between rain running out through the beam and rain finding the one path that ends on the tub cover.

One year of warranty, which is the category norm and a straight loss against the Domi's five. Materials and warranties sets out why we read a term as the manufacturer's own estimate of service life.

Skip it if: The tub sits on a wooden deck. The published rating names a hardened floor, and a figure measured on concrete is not a figure for joists.

The argument for a retractable canopy over a hot tub is the one thing louvers cannot do: pull the roof right back and look at the sky from the water. If that is the point of the tub for you, nothing with a fixed or louvered roof replaces it.

Powder-coated heat-transfer woodgrain steel on 4.7 in. x 4.7 in. posts, 242.51 lb assembled — the thickest posts and the heaviest frame of any retractable pergola we track, which is the right end of the class to be at when a structure spends its life in warm damp air.

The canopy is 500 g/m² CPAI-84 certified sling fabric on a manual pull-through rod, with anchor plates and ground stakes included. A published fabric weight and a fire certification on a retractable is unusual; most of the class publishes neither.

What is not published is a wind or a snow figure, and that is the trade. Treat the fabric as seasonal — off before winter, off before a storm — and treat the frame as the permanent part. Best pergolas with a retractable canopy covers the class in full.

Skip it if: You want the tub usable in rain without going outside to deploy anything. A retractable roof is a thing you operate; a louvered roof can simply be left shut.

Aluminum pergola with a translucent polycarbonate roof panel over a wooden deck

Best if you only want rain off

Outsunny Hardtop Polycarbonate Pergola

A solid-roof aluminum pergola that publishes a roof load figure instead of a wind rating — useful for rain, unproven for wind.

Sizes
12 x 10 ft, 14.5 x 10 ft, 16.5 x 10 ft

The cheapest honest way to put a solid roof over a hot tub, and the one pick here we would qualify rather than recommend outright.

Aluminum frame under solid polycarbonate with drainage holes, and a published roof weight capacity of 10 lb/ft² (50 kg/m²). A roof capacity is not a snow rating and we will not read it as one, but it is a published number in a class where most listings have none, and it is the figure to check against your local ground snow load before you commit.

Sizes run 12 x 10 ft, 14.5 x 10 ft and 16.5 x 10 ft, which is generous for a tub plus a step-down and a towel bench. Light comes through, so the space underneath does not go cave-dark the way it does under steel.

The steam problem is real here and we are not going to soften it. A fixed solid roof over a hot tub traps vapor against its own underside. If you buy this, plan on leaving at least one side wide open to cross-ventilation, keep the tub cover on between soaks, and inspect the fixings at the posts annually — warm damp air finds a plated fastener faster than anything else in the yard.

Skip it if: The tub is enclosed on more than two sides. Without a cross-draught, a solid roof turns the space into a condensation trap.

What a hot tub does to the structure above it

Every other use case on this site is about weather arriving from outside. A hot tub is the only one where the attack comes from underneath, continuously, from the thing you installed the pergola to cover.

An uncovered tub at temperature puts a steady plume of warm, humid air straight up into the roof structure. It carries whatever sanitizer is in the water as vapor. It condenses on the first cold surface it meets, which is the underside of your roof, and it runs back down into the joints, the bolt holes and the post tops — the three places a shade structure is least able to dry out.

That is why this page ranks adjustable roofs above solid ones, and why it treats the fixing schedule as part of the product. A pergola over a hot tub is not a pergola in a harder climate; it is a pergola in a different climate, one you run yourself at bathing temperature whenever you feel like it.

The four published figures worth comparing

Everything that separates these four is in what the manufacturer prints, so here it is side by side rather than in prose.

Published manufacturer figures for the four picks, as checked on their own product pages

Published manufacturer figures for the four picks, as checked on their own product pages

Two things stand out. Only one row has a figure in every column, and it is the one we picked. And the retractable has no published figure at all — not a scandal in a class where the correct storm procedure is to roll the fabric away, but it does mean the frame is the part you are buying.

Anchoring over a deck is a different job

Most hot tubs sit on a reinforced deck or a poured pad, because a filled tub is a serious dead load in its own right. That changes the anchoring question in a way the product pages mostly ignore.

  • On a concrete pad you have the easy case. Expansion anchors into sound concrete, stainless where you can get it, and the published ratings apply as printed. This is the condition PURPLE LEAF's 72 mph figure was measured under.
  • On a timber or composite deck, a surface plate is not an anchor. The fixing has to reach framing — a joist, a beam or added blocking — not decking boards. Domi is the only manufacturer here that names a wooden deck in its own anchoring instruction, which is why it leads this page.
  • Set the posts clear of the tub access panels. Every hot tub needs its equipment bay opened eventually, and a pergola post landed in front of one turns a service call into a demolition job.
  • Upgrade the base-plate fasteners to stainless at assembly. The foot of a post over a hot tub sits in the wettest, warmest air on the property and dries last. Plated steel there is the most predictable first failure on an otherwise sound frame.
  • Then re-check every fixing after the first winter. How to anchor a pergola covers the full method by surface, including the no-drill options and why most of them do not hold.

Sizing it around the lid, not the tub

The most common sizing mistake here has nothing to do with the footprint of the water.

  1. 01Measure the tub, then measure the lid lifting. A hinged cover swings up and back well beyond the shell. If a beam is in that arc you will be fighting it twice a week forever.
  2. 02Add a step-out zone on the entry side. Somewhere to stand and dry, clear of the drip line at the roof edge.
  3. 03Check the eave height, not the peak. You get out of a hot tub standing on a step, which puts your head a foot higher than it is on the deck.
  4. 04Leave one long side fully open. Cross-ventilation is what stops a covered tub becoming a condensation trap, and it costs nothing in rain protection if the roof overhangs.
  5. 05Then size to the published range, not to the gap. The louvered pergolas here start at 10 x 10 ft; forcing a tub into the smallest size in a range leaves no room for the two steps above.

What we would actually do

Domi, louvers open after every soak and closed before rain, bolted into deck framing or a pad with stainless fixings. It is the only structure here publishing a wind figure, a per-square-foot snow figure and a deck anchoring method, and the louvers solve the one problem a hot tub creates that no other use case does.

If the tub is on concrete and you want the heaviest frame, the PURPLE LEAF Athena — a 1.5 mm wall and 4.33 in. crossbeams, with a 72 mph figure measured under exactly the condition you would be installing it in. Accept the one-year warranty for what it is.

If the point of the tub is the sky, the Sunjoy retractable, treated as a frame that happens to carry fabric. Take the canopy off before winter and it will outlast every retractable that is left out.

And whichever you choose, keep the tub cover on between soaks. It is the single cheapest thing you can do for the structure above it, and it is free.

What we cut, and why

Every model below was a genuine candidate and did not make the list. The reason is stated in each case, because a shortlist with no visible rejections is not evidence of a selection process.

Open-trellis cedar pergolas
A multi-level cedar trellis is a fine structure and the wrong roof for this job — it sheds neither rain nor the vapor coming off the water, and untreated end grain directly above a hot tub sits in the wettest air on the property. We rank cedar properly on [best cedar and wood pergola kits](/pergolas/best-cedar-and-wood-pergola-kits), where the use case suits it.
Hardtop gazebos
Not a mistake, just a different page. A gazebo encloses more and vents less, and the trade-offs are specific enough to deserve their own ranking — [best gazebos for hot tubs](/gazebos/best-gazebos-for-hot-tubs) covers them.
Any model whose wind rating is not tied to an anchoring condition
Over a hot tub the structure stands on, or beside, a vessel holding a ton of water and the people in it. A rating with no stated anchoring method is not usable here. That is a disqualification under our [methodology](/methodology) rather than a verdict on the product.

Questions people ask

What is the best pergola for a hot tub?
The Domi Outdoor Living louvered pergola. It publishes 72 mph of wind, 15 lb/ft² of snow and an anchoring method covering a wooden deck as well as concrete — the only pergola we track that prints all three — and its adjustable louvers vent the steam a hot tub produces instead of trapping it.
Can you put a pergola over a hot tub?
Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to buy one. The constraint is ventilation rather than strength: warm, chemically loaded vapor rises off the water continuously and condenses on the underside of a solid roof. An adjustable louvered roof, or a solid roof with at least one side left fully open, keeps that air moving.
Should a hot tub pergola have a solid roof or louvers?
Louvers, in almost every case. A solid roof keeps rain off the cover but traps the vapor coming off the water against its own underside, where it condenses and runs into the joints. Louvers close for rain and open to clear the steam, which is the only roof that does both jobs.
How much clearance do you need above a hot tub?
Enough for the cover to lift fully and for someone standing on the tub step, which is higher than you think. Measure the arc of the lid swinging open before you set a beam height, and work to the eave height rather than the peak — eave height is what you actually stand under.
Can a pergola be anchored to a hot tub deck?
Only into framing. A surface plate screwed to decking boards is not an anchor; the fixing has to reach a joist, a beam or added blocking. Domi is the one manufacturer here that names a wooden deck in its own anchoring instruction — PURPLE LEAF's published wind figure specifically assumes a hardened floor.
Will a pergola over a hot tub corrode?
The frame extrusions are powder-coated aluminum and hold up well. The parts that fail are the fixings: warm damp air finds plated steel fast, and the foot of a post dries last. Upgrade the base-plate fasteners to stainless at assembly and inspect them annually.
Do I need a permit for a pergola over a hot tub?
Often, and the hot tub makes it more likely rather than less, because a filled tub is a significant load and may bring electrical inspection with it. Ask your building department before you order — pergola permits and HOA rules sets out the questions to ask and the order to do things in.
Is a pergola or a gazebo better over a hot tub?
A pergola if you want air movement and the option of sky; a gazebo if you want an enclosed room with netting and curtains. The gazebo encloses more and vents less, which is a real trade over a steam source — we rank that side of it on best gazebos for hot tubs.
